AA conducted the Guyana Ecotourism Study with a comprehensive evaluation of Guyana’s emerging nature- and culture-based tourism potential. The assessment focused on evaluating the economic, social, and environmental viability of ecotourism across key regions, including North Rupununi, South Central Rupununi, and the Essequibo area. The study engaged over 100 stakeholders—including Indigenous communities, private sector operators, and government officials—to capture diverse perspectives and ensure alignment with local priorities and national policy frameworks. The team conducted field visits to leading community-based tourism (CBT) sites and analyzed factors such as conservation linkages, market readiness, and institutional support structures. It identified viable ecotourism circuits, mapped infrastructure gaps, and recommended enhancements to governance, product development, and marketing strategies. Importantly, the study highlighted the connection between biodiversity and economic opportunity by showcasing how Indigenous-owned lodges and wildlife-based experiences contribute to both livelihoods and ecosystem preservation. In addition to offering targeted technical recommendations, the study supported the development of Guyana’s National Ecotourism Policy framework, providing guidance on governance models, benefit-sharing mechanisms, and destination management structures. The work emphasized gender inclusion, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment as central tenets of long-term ecotourism growth.
